以下摘附文章是我於師院進修教育學程時,某課堂教授要求學生須翻譯其所摘錄之數篇教育論文其中之一,當時此篇原文由我負責,僅摘錄我所翻譯之某段落。
記得當時每於下課用完晚餐後,即老實端坐電腦前,先一字一句閱讀原文後,隨即在原文下方試著用最通暢且自己最易理解之敘述將其譯為中文字句,每遇有不懂之單字則翻查各種可能之解釋並套入句中前後反覆誦讀,以期能求得忠實表達作者所欲傳達之文意。
今日看新聞,澎湖縣政府在其英文網站中將七美之名稱翻為"seven-America",不禁令我呀然失笑。
依照縣府員工提出之解釋,該網站之建置為外包外部公司為之,往後將做到嚴格把關動作,避免相同情況再次發生。
著實令我不解者,通過激烈公職考試脫穎而出之公僕,必有其一定之學識涵養,實在不該發生如此荒唐且一眼即能發覺之錯誤,更不該容忍此種錯誤竟在網站發布大半年後才為人所發現。其所顯示者,不知該說承攬該項外包業務之公司過於散漫取巧(或許是直接使用翻譯軟體),亦或者任該業務之公僕對自己所負責之業務漫不經心。
古人說,翻譯之作品需達"信雅達"三境界,一句"seven-America"雖不致於不雅,但實過於荒腔走板,遑論能信實表達,更枉費政府機關為便利外籍人士資訊取得之美意。
或許是學生時的我太過鄉愿老實吧!
